Know what causes infertility

The infertility burden in both men and women is increasing in India. Over 12 -18 million couples in India are diagnosed with infertility every year. Infertility is most often seen as a woman's issue and it is them who bear the brunt of not bearing a child. But according to a recent report by WHO on the status of infertility in India, of all infertility cases, approximately 50% is due to “male factor” infertility, owing to the reproductive anomalies in the male. They have reported that while the sperm count of a normal Indian adult male used to be 60 million/ml three decades ago, it now stands at around 20 million/ml.

Male infertility factor is the primary reason for inability to conceive specially between the age group of 29 to 35. They either have a combination of low sperm production, poor sperm motility, abnormal morphology or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm.  However, due to social stigma, male fertility problems are considered secondary and most often go undiagnosed and untreated.

Causes Of Infertility

Multiple factors play a role in causing Infertility in Men:

Pregnancy Delay

Couples delay pregnancy in favor of their education, career choices, even social commitments. In males, sperm quality goes down with age. The best chances for conception are in age groups below 35 years.

Obesity & Hypertension

With advancing age, the chances of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and related diseases increase and result in infertility.

Stress

Extreme stress in men can take a toll on their fertility. It impacts sperm production and testosterone levels in men. Overexposure to certain environmental elements such as heat, toxins and chemicals can reduce sperm production or sperm function.

Unhealthy Habits

Unhealthy habits such as smoking, illicit drug use, and heavy alcohol consumption to overcome stress affect the fertility of men. The harmful toxins can damage reproductive organs, impact the production of sperm count and quality in men.

Sedentary Lifestyle

A sedentary lifestyle involving constant sitting, lack of physical activity, and regular consumption of junk, processed and canned foods leads to obesity in men, ultimately raising the chances of infertility

FAQ's

  • How much Hairfall is of concern and requires treatment?
The American Academy of Dermatology has also stated that it is normal for a person to lose about 50–100 hairs each day. Anyone who notices that they are losing much more hair than they usually do (during combing or washing) or observe any warning signals like gradual thinning at the forehead or receding hairline, circular patchy bald spots or loosening of hair should consult a doctor (dermatologist or trichologist).
  • What are the reasons for excessive hairfall?
Excessive hair fall can be the result of one or a combination of the below mentioned reasons: Family history (heredity) The most common cause of hair loss is a hereditary condition called androgenic alopecia. In men, it’s called male pattern hair loss and in women it’s called female pattern hair loss. It usually occurs gradually and in predictable patterns - a receding hairline and bald spots in men and thinning hair or widening part in women. It is due to the effect of testosterone metabolites (DHT) in genetically susceptible hair follicles. Hormonal changes Hormonal changes caused due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, PCOD or thyroid problems can cause permanent or temporary hair loss. Stopping some types of birth control pills can also cause a temporary hormonal imbalance. Medications Hair loss can be a side effect of certain drugs, such as those used for cancer (both chemotherapy and radiotherapy), arthritis, depression, heart problems and high blood pressure. Stress Any kind of physical trauma (surgery, accident or a severe illness) can cause temporary hair loss. This can also happen after a stressful time in your life, such as a divorce, death of a loved one or financial crisis. Stress can affect the blood supply to the hair follicles thereby reducing the nutrition required for hair strength and growth. Dramatic weight loss Sudden weight loss is a form of physical trauma that can result in hair fall.
