Know Why Hair Fall Happens...
ABOUT THE DISEASE:
Hair loss is a very rampant problem today. Statistics suggests that approximately 45 million men and 20 million women are affected by the problem. Studies also indicate that there has been a 250 per cent increase in hair loss cases during the last five years, the age-group most affected being 16-25. In today’s fast paced lifestyle coupled with pollution, stress, unhealthy eating habits, every other individual is facing hair problems. The problem over the years has thus gained giant proportions and has become a big worry for young India as one in every four Indians suffer from hair loss, and is still increasing at an alarming rate.
Hair loss is not only a complex medical condition, but one that affects every aspect of the hair loss suffering life, both social and professional. The American Hair Loss Association recognizes that hair loss is a serious life altering condition that can no longer be ignored by the medical community and society as a whole. It should be realized that the psychological damage caused by hair loss and feeling unattractive can be just as devastating as any serious disease, and in fact, can take an emotional toll that directly affects physical health.
CAUSES OF HAIRFALL
Excessive hairfall can be the result of one or a combination of the below mentioned reasons:
The most common cause of hair loss is a hereditary condition called androgenic alopecia. In men, it’s called male pattern hair loss and in women it’s called female pattern hair loss. It usually occurs gradually and in predictable patterns - a receding hairline and bald spots in men and thinning hair or widening part in women. It is due to the effect of testosterone metabolites (DHT) in genetically susceptible hair follicles.
Hormonal changes caused due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, PCOD or thyroid problems can cause permanent or temporary hair loss. Stopping some types of birth control pills can also cause a temporary hormonal imbalance.
Medical conditions which cause hairfall include Alopecia areata (immune system related condition which causes patchy hair loss), Scalp infections (such as ringworm or scalp psoriasis) and Trichotillomania (a hair-pulling disorder). Sexually transmitted infection (STI) like Syphilis can also lead to hair loss. Left untreated, syphilis can cause patchy hair loss on the scalp, eyebrows, beard, and elsewhere.
Nutritional Deficiency & Medications
Vitamin deficiencies (particularly B, C, D and E) or too little biotin, iron, protein, or zinc can lead to hair loss. Hair loss can be a side effect of certain drugs, such as those used for cancer (both chemotherapy and radiotherapy), arthritis, depression, heart problems and high blood pressure.
Stress & Weight Loss
Any kind of physical trauma (surgery, accident or a severe illness) can cause temporary hair loss. This can also happen after a stressful time in your life, such as a divorce, death of a loved one or financial crisis. Stress can affect the blood supply to the hair follicles thereby reducing the nutrition required for hair strength and growth. Sudden weight loss is a form of physical trauma that can result in hair fall.
